A Nutrition Focused Approach to Team-Based Care in Metabolic Genetics: Integrating Clinical, Laboratory, and Nutrition Expertise

An educational offering sponsored by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) with contributions from Genetic Metabolic Dietitians International (GMDI)

Description

This session will explore the pathophysiology of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) focusing on the main clinical presentations and treatments for select disorders.  Case studies will be used to highlight risks for decompensation and necessary interventions.  The audience will appreciate the essential role of nutrition therapy in the management of IEMs in addition to barriers to treatment approaches.  This session will also familiarize the audience with the scope of the metabolic dietitian in the interdisciplinary metabolic team, as well as resources for the emergency and nutrition management of inborn errors of metabolism.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology, main clinical presentation and treatment of IEMs.
  • Explain the essential role of nutrition therapy in the management of IEMs.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with available nutrition resources in the management of IEMs
