Course Description

This course reviews diagnostic challenges of FISH panels used to detect recurrent rearrangements in myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase fusions. We examine the cause and implications of false negative FISH results and discuss how complementary tests, such as chromosome analysis with metaphase FISH and RNA sequencing strategies, can help overcome these challenges. These cases highlight the importance of acknowledging the strengths and limitations of different assays to arrive at the correct diagnosis and guide patient management.

Target Audience

All health care professionals interested in the diagnosis and management of patients with hematologic malignancies. This series is presented as a collaboration between ClinGen Somatic, VICC, and ACMG consortia.

Agenda

Presentations followed by live Q&A.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast strengths and limitations of chromosome analysis, interphase FISH, metaphase FISH, and RNA sequencing to detect chromosomal rearrangements.
  2. Recognize the importance of pathology assessment and genetic testing in diagnosis of myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase gene fusions.
  3. Explain the impact of making a specific diagnosis on patient management.

Financial Disclosures

Accredited Continuing Education Financial Disclosure

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide Accredited Continuing Education (ACE) for physicians. ACMG is an organization committed to improvement of patient care and general health by the incorporation of genetics and genomics into clinical practice.

ACMG has implemented the following procedures to ensure the independence of ACE activities from commercial influence/promotional bias, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) requires that providers (ACMG) must be able to demonstrate that: 1) everyone in a position to control the content of an ACE activity has disclosed all financial relationships that they have had in the past 24 months with ineligible* companies; 2) ACMG has implemented a mechanism to mitigate relevant financial relationships; and 3) all relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies are disclosed to the learners before the beginning of the educational activity. The learners must also be informed if no relevant financial relationships exist.
*Ineligible companies are defined as those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.
