Genomics-Informed Government Policy: Starting the Conversation with Policymakers

Sponsored by The ACMG Advocacy and Government Affairs Committee

Description

As genomics becomes increasingly central to patient care and public health, policymakers face urgent questions around access, oversight, and public trust. This session brings together experts from science, policy, and public service to explore how federal, state, and local policies can evolve alongside genomic innovation—while remaining equitable, ethical, and grounded in scientific evidence.

Genetics professionals are uniquely positioned to help guide these conversations and serve as trusted advisers. This session will offer practical support on how to begin those discussions, with panelists sharing insights from Capitol Hill, the Administration, and the medical community.

Target Audience

Designed for genetics professionals, policy leaders, and advocates, the session will offer real-world strategies for engaging with government stakeholders and shaping genomics-informed policy.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe effective strategies for engaging with policymakers at various levels of government.
  • Explain how genomics professionals can contribute to equitable, science-based policy development.
  • Identify common challenges and best practices for building relationships between scientific and policy communities.
