Authorization for Genetic Testing: A Primer for Genetics Professionals - 2018 Short Course
About this course
The current insurance framework for the approval of genetic testing is challenging due to terminology, rapid changes and lack of data on standard clinical outcomes used by payers. Many clinicians have become frustrated or complacent toward prior authorization. Many labs are collecting lower reimbursements due to lack of prior approval leading to a decrease in diagnosis and patient satisfaction. Accepting that we must work within this system, the best way to improve authorization and reimbursement is with teamwork between clinicians, laboratory professionals and insurance companies. Each of the sessions outlined below is aimed at improving understanding of a different aspect of the authorization process. Prior to the session, participants will be sent some foundational readings to improve their literacy surrounding this process. Each session will begin with an interactive case during which the audience will be asked to review and make a decision for or against coverage from either their own standpoint or that of the presenter, e.g. utilization and review policy writer, laboratory representative, or payer. Each session will focus on tangible strategies for improving reimbursement/authorization. The final session will use several illustrative cases to stimulate debate and further thinking on this complex topic.
