Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of the recommendations for cytogenetics laboratory work-up of patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia (AML, A-ALL, P-ALL). The module is designed for laboratory directors who sign out cases and covers both pediatric and adult patients.

The purpose of the module is to implement newly developed practice guidelines to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for patients with acute leukemia. Participants are asked to choose 10 consecutive cases of new acute leukemia and answer 20 questions regarding the work-up of these cases.

Cytogenetic and molecular studies have become increasingly important in the clinical management of patients with acute leukemia. These studies can provide diagnostic and prognostic information and help classify subtypes of acute leukemia for targeted therapies. To address the complexity of laboratory testing in diagnosing acute leukemia, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) have developed a new clinical practice guideline. The aim of this module is to encourage the implementation of this practice guideline in combination with recommendations from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) for appropriate testing of patients with acute leukemia.

The document also includes references to relevant literature on this topic, including guidelines from the CAP and ASH and the ACMG technical standards and guidelines for chromosome studies of neoplastic blood and bone marrow.

Overall, this document provides an overview of the recommendations for the cytogenetic analysis of newly diagnosed acute leukemia, with the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for patients.
