Team-based Genetic Health Care: An Effective System of Care for Delivery of Cancer Genetic Services
Back to course
Pdf Summary
In this study, researchers compared the effectiveness of team-based genetic consultation versus genetic counselor-based consultation for delivering cancer genetic services in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. They found that patients who completed genetic consultation under the team-based model were 1.5 times more likely to undergo multiple cancer screening and preventive procedures compared to those under the genetic counselor model. The researchers aimed to understand the reasons for this difference.

To analyze the data, the researchers reviewed medical records of VA patients with a genetic consult between 2010 and 2017. They characterized the annotations in the records as personalized recommendations, options, or generic messages. The researchers also conducted interviews with genetics providers and referring providers from VA facilities.

The results showed that the number of annotations per record was similar between the two models. However, the team-based model had more personalized recommendations, while the genetic counselor model had more generic messages. These findings help explain the higher uptake of cancer screening and prevention procedures in the team-based model.

The researchers concluded that team-based cancer genetic services provide a more patient-centered and effective system of care, resulting in improved outcomes. They suggested that healthcare organizations providing cancer genetic services should plan for multidisciplinary and multi-professional teams of genetic providers. As the demand for cancer genetic services increases, team-based genetic consultation will become even more essential.

The study was funded by VA Health Services Research and Development, and for more information, researchers can contact maren.scheuner@va.gov.
