2023 ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting Digital Edition: Poster Gallery-Six Years of Community and Student Engagement with Family Health History in a Baltimore Public Market

This study discusses the impact of a Family Health History (FH) outreach table at a public market in East Baltimore. Student volunteers interact with patrons, offering information about FH and assisting in activities such as constructing a model FH tree. The study analyzes data from 2017 to 2023, including the number of sessions, patrons, and demographics. Results show that patron interest in FH collection and disclosure has increased over time, with cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular illness being the most commonly mentioned health concerns. While most patrons expressed interest in learning about FH, some hesitated to share FH with family members or clinicians due to concerns about cost, privacy, and insurance coverage. The study suggests the need for additional strategies to emphasize the value of FH communication and improve prevention measures and health outcomes. Future directions include expanding educational materials and fostering community trust. Overall, the FH outreach table has facilitated conversations about FH in the East Baltimore community and highlighted the challenges and importance of FH communication.
