Reasons for Pursuing Germline Genetic Testing and Family Sharing of Results Among Young Black Women With Breast Cancer
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study aimed to assess the reasons for pursuing genetic testing and the frequency of sharing test results with immediate family members among young Black women with breast cancer. The researchers conducted a population-based sample study of self-identified Black women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at or below the age of 50.

Out of the 175 women included in the study, 135 had received genetic testing, while 40 had not. The study found that Black women were frequently motivated to pursue genetic testing because of the potential benefit to their family, rather than to guide treatment decisions. This motivation was particularly strong among women with daughters. The researchers suggested that this pattern may be driven by greater awareness of BRCA associations with female cancer and low awareness of male breast and other BRCA-associated cancers.

The findings highlight the importance of conversations about genetic testing going beyond treatment implications and including discussions around the potential benefits for family members. It is also crucial to emphasize the importance of sharing test results with family members, regardless of their gender.

In terms of sharing test results, the study found that 72% of women with daughters, 55% of women with sons, 70% of women with sisters, and 44% of women with brothers shared their genetic test results. This indicates that women were more likely to share their results with female relatives.

Overall, the study emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to promote genetic testing as a means of benefiting families and to encourage communication and sharing of test results among family members.
