Play Activity and Schooling Pattern in Children with Down Syndrome in Resource Constrained Settings
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study looked at the play activity and schooling patterns in children with Down syndrome (DS) in resource-constrained settings. The study found that children with DS had significantly lower play activity scores compared to their healthy peers. Additionally, girls with DS scored lower than boys in the domain that requires play materials and support from adults. However, the percentage of children attending school was comparable to national population data.

The study also found that the schooling pattern among children with DS was diverse, with one-third attending 'Anganwadis' and the rest attending special or regular schools. Recurrent illness and difficult adjustment were the most common reasons for non-attendance or dropout from school. Reluctance to accept differently-abled children by regular schools was also common.

Overall, this study highlighted the challenges faced by children with DS in resource-constrained settings. It emphasized the need for specialized facilities and increased awareness to improve play activity and schooling opportunities for these children. The findings also suggested that interventions should focus on providing play materials and support for girls with DS, as well as addressing the societal preference for boys with disabilities.

The study concluded that children with DS in resource-constrained settings have limited opportunities for play activity and face challenges in accessing education. It emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to promote the overall development and well-being of children with DS.
