Gauging Medical Student Comfort in the Delivery of Difficult News in the Context of Genetics

Pdf Summary
The study aimed to improve the comfort level of medical students in delivering genetic diagnoses. A presurvey conducted among first and second year medical students revealed that most students were uncomfortable with this task. To address this, genetics interest groups at two universities hosted lunch and learn sessions for students to learn about delivering difficult genetic diagnoses. Students were presented with cases and practiced delivering the diagnoses in small groups, with faculty moderators providing feedback. A post-survey was conducted after the session to measure the response.

The results showed that the practice sessions helped increase the students' comfort level in delivering genetic diagnoses. Feedback from students indicated that they would prefer more formal training integrated into the curriculum. The study concluded that introducing the delivery of sensitive genetic diagnoses followed by practice contributes to decreased discomfort and increased confidence in this skill.

The findings highlight the importance of early training in delivering difficult news in medical education. The study suggests that every opportunity to improve these skills is valuable for increasing student knowledge and confidence as they prepare for their clinical careers. However, there is still a need for more formal training to further enhance students' abilities in this area.
